Italian biologist Luigi Galvani: Galvani was an Italian scientist who studied the effects of electricity on animal nerves and muscles. He is famous for the "frog legs" experiment in which he accidently touched an electrical charge to the lower body of a dead frog and observed it to twitch. At first he thought that the frog's body contained a special chemical that caused the twitch. Later scientists proved it to be the electrical charge that caused the muscles to contract (become shorter for a time). Galvani's name was taken by the scientific community for the term galvanism, meaning to have an electric current. click to open
