On Monday June 19, 2000 the dead bodies of 58 persons were discovered in the container of a Dutch-registered truck which arrived in Dover, England from the port of Zeebrugge. Two Chinese people have been charged with helping to smuggle into the UK the 58 illegal immigrants who died in the back of a lorry at Dover. You Yi, a 38-year-old chef from South Woodford, East London, and Ying Guo, 29, an interpreter of the same address were arrested on Tuesday evening. They have been charged with conspiracy to facilitate illegal entry into the United Kingdom of the 58 immigrants. The pair will appear before Dover Magistrates at 0900 GMT on Saturday. The Dutch driver of the lorry who was accused of the manslaughter of the 58 immigrants has been remanded in custody for seven days. Perry Wacker, 32, of Rotterdam, Holland, faces one count of facilitating the illegal entry into the UK of two people, and one count of attempting to facilitate the illegal entry of 58 people as well as 58 counts of manslaughter. He appeared before Folkestone magistrates on Friday morning. click to open
