Chinese girls dressed as soldiers perform to celebrate the forthcoming International Children's Day in Beijing 29 May 2004. Each year in China, thousands of children are put up for adoption. Most girls as Chinese couples are allowed to have only one child by law, and boys are thought to be better able to provide for parents as they age. The International Children's Day falls on June 1.
