Shanghai Lupu Bridge: Vehicles pass along the newly opened Lupu Bridge across Huangpu River in Shanghai June 28, 2003. China opened what it says is the world's longest steel-arch bridge at a ceremony in the commercial capital Shanghai on Saturday. The bridge whose 550-metre (1,800-ft) arch is longer than the previous record holder, the 518-metre long New River Gorge Bridge in the U.S. state of West Virginia, state media said. The 2.5 billion yuan ($302 million), 3.9-km (2.4-mile) Lupu Bridge was inaugurated by Chinese basketball star Yao Ming, who led about 1,000 people in a fun run across the structure to mark the event.
